What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method of body conditioning was developed by Joseph Pilates more than 70 years ago. The Pilates method consists of more than 500 exercises that can be done on a mat or with equipment. It is an ongoing challenge that combines Eastern and Western philosophies of mental and physical conditioning.

What does this mean?

There are 6 principles for Pilates:

1. Breathing
The breathing pattern is connected with the movement; in order to improve circulation, to release and cleanse the tension in the muscles.

2. Control
Mind control over muscles.

3. Flowing Movement
Increases flexibility and length of joints and muscles.

4. Centering
Refers to controlling the “powerhouse” abs, buttocks, and back

5. Precision
Quality of movements over quantity

6. Concentration
The mind and body work together. Every movement requires total focus.
